During World War II in Germany, young American soldier Dirk Dawson is singled out as the weak link in his squad. Mocked and humiliated by both his peers and his superiors, Dirk survives a chaotic patrol that ends in injury and a hollow Purple Heart, an act meant to honor him but instead deepens his shame.
